Staying Healthy As A Remote Worker
Remote work has much to offer, and it gets even better if you have guardrails in place that help you maintain your wellness. To that end, consider making quick and easy moves, such as adopting an exercise routine and nutrition plan, purchasing a high-quality chair, and decorating your home office with flowers. Social connections are important, too.
ADOPT AN EXERCISE ROUTINE
For some people, remote work has the unfortunate side effect of contributing to a sedentary lifestyle. The good news is that committing to a regular exercise routine can help you avoid that pitfall. You don’t even need a gym membership or fancy at-home equipment to do so. For instance, many cardio exercises require no gear and are suitable for a variety of experience levels.
INVEST IN A GOOD CHAIR
Unless you have a standing desk, remote work means you’re seated for much of the day, so buying a good chair is a worthwhile investment. Some features to look for in an office chair are ample lumbar support and adjustable armrests and backrests. The height needs to be adjustable as well. Try to avoid chairs that are overly hard or squishy. If you take the time to find the right chair, your body and career are likely to benefit.
DON’T NEGLECT PERSONAL CONNECTIONS
Maintaining connections with others is an important part of wellness, and working remotely means you don’t have as many in-person opportunities. Don’t fret, though; there are still plenty of ways to stay connected. In your professional life, consider conducting video calls with coworkers or sending a chat message to check in. In your personal life, scheduling regular meet-ups with friends or simply going on a walk and calling someone you care about are good moves.
MAINTAIN GOOD NUTRITION
It’s hard to be well without eating right, but many people find doing so a challenge when working from home. Some people overeat thanks to their proximity to the refrigerator, while others become hyper-focused on work and neglect regular meals.
One good way to foster good eating habits is to create a regular schedule that incorporates breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Another best practice is eating away from your desk, which gives you a break and helps you return to work refreshed. Try to be mindful of your liquid intake, too. Avoid overdoing it on coffee and help yourself stay hydrated by keeping water within easy reach.
BRING HOME SOME FLOWERS
Flowers not only look and smell nice, but they can also improve the way your mind and body feel by reducing stress. With a clearer head and increased comfort, you may find you’re more productive and happy — all thanks to one of nature’s mood boosters. You can pick up a bouquet from a florist or grow some flowering plants of your own.
By taking care of yourself and your workspace, you can focus on reaping the rewards of remote work. Be well and don’t forget to enjoy the flowers!
